✒ based on Revelation 11:15, this hymn draws a striking contrast between the humiliation Christ suffered while on earth and the glory, adoration, shouting, and singing that will accompany His second coming and the beginning of His kingdom; the hymn takes on power and meaning when sung from the heart of those who look for the second coming of Christ.

I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

✒ Zinzendorf was deeply impressed by a picture of the thorn-crowned Christ that bore underneath the words "What hast thou done for Me?"; for Zinzendorf, writing hymns was a passion; he wrote the first of some 2000 at age 12, and the last one came from his pen just a few days before his death. 

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

✒ a triumphant hymn of the Resurrection

Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

The sacred anthem slowly rang

✒ begins with the first Sabbath, reflects on our present experience, and looks forward to the renewed worship, with the Creator of the Sabbath, in a restored world.

​Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.
For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.
For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.
Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief.

As birds unto the genial homeland fly,
The winter’s cold and low’ring skies to flee,
So seeks my soul Thy gracious presence here

​✒ a special hymn of the feeling of love and reverence for the holy hours of the Sabbath; especially touching is the third stanza, which asks God's blessing on all who are in pain, or distressed, and those who mourn the loss of a loved one.

One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.
For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake:

✒ the second line, which refers to Hebrews 13:12 "without the gate", prompted a small child to ask what was meant by a hill not having a city wall; the child did not understand that 'without' in this case meant "outside"​
